I’ve always loved the concept of Small Business Saturday. It’s become a nice little “holiday” on which small businesses can shine and make a few extra bucks. You know, like the Black Friday of Small Biz.
There’s one major issue that I have with it, though. It comes after Black Friday. Thus means, a lot of people have already blown most of their Christmas shopping and other money on major retailers.
So, what’s left over?
Black Friday used to be one day a year on which businesses would hold blowout sales in order to get “in the black.” Here’s a quick and dirty history from BlackFriday.com:
“The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.”
It was a fine idea as it makes sense to choose the day after Thanksgiving as the perfect time to hold big sales. Any business can use a big day, and Black Friday was meant to help any sort of business. But then, the big boxes and other major brands and retailers hijacked it.
Small Business Saturday is sort of a way to put small biz back in the spotlight for one day. And it does help. But, I propose something better.
Every Saturday Should Be #SmallBusinessSaturday!
I’m far from alone in this opinion. But, the idea deserves a signal boost.
Every Saturday, make a commitment to support a locally-owned small business. It doesn’t matter what it is. If you have a choice between the mom-and-pop or a corporate business, choose the former.
Also, it isn’t just retail you have to support. It can be those who blog as a business, sell products on Etsy, Ebay, or Shopify. It could even be buying from small third-party sellers in online marketplaces.
So, what if you’re broke by Saturday, like many of us are? Give your favorite local businesses and favorite online businesses shout-outs. Like, share, and comment on their social media statuses, blog posts, videos, and other content! Every little bit helps and does more than you know.

We should do this every Saturday. Shop small, shop local as often as you can, and if you shop online, choose a small seller.
