Is Writing Down Your Random Thoughts Truly Random?

Writing down your random thoughts is a bit like rolling the dice. You may not know what to expect, but it’s never truly random.

There’s never a lack of thoughts wandering about in my synapses. I have so many that I could post whatever random thoughts I have at will. But, as I’ve found over the years, even seemingly the most random things are not as random as they first appear.

That’s right. Nothing is truly random. It always comes from somewhere.

In any case, I’m terrible at organizing my thoughts. With great practice, though, I’ve become at least a passable writer. I still often fail at being concise and to the point. Sometimes, I’ll put together long strings of words that prove misleading. But, I still write, because that’s the only way for me to get better at putting my thoughts into words.

I get a lot of my better writing ideas from “random” sessions. Fact is, when we write, we are able to access parts of our consciousness we don’t ordinarily access in our daily lives. If something seems out of the blue when you write, sit back and try to understand where it came from. It did come from within you, somehow.

Spontaneity, too, isn’t random. It is purely acting on the impulses and thoughts that we all too often find we have to suppress. Some people can’t suppress them. Others choose not to. Even when I sit down to write myself, I still suppress some things, even when I know the writing is meant for my own eyes only.

So, when you write something “random,” it’s good to figure out what made you write that? I wouldn’t stew over it. But, it’s good to reflect. You may just learn something incredibly insightful about yourself.

  1. I am a total self-censoring writer. There’s so much on my mind that truly has the potential to turn into something absolutely beautiful, yet it doesn’t because of my fears and insecurities of being judged.
