Is It Worth Buying Signature Spellbook: Gideon For Magic the Gathering?

The Jace Signature Spellbook was an interesting concept, but many players and collectors agree it fell short in terms of power level. But, with the Gideon Signature Spellbook, Wizards of the Coast chose some significantly powerful cards, all of which make sense to include in Gideon’s spell book. So, just how good is Signature Spellbook: Gideon?

The Signature Spellbook: Gideon Checklist

  • Gideon Jura
  • Martyr’s Bond
  • Path to Exile
  • Rest in Peace
  • Shielded by Faith
  • True Conviction
  • Worship
  • Blackblade Reforged

When I first reviewed this set Back in June 2019, these cards were worth buying the box set, with the market value of the eight cards coming in around $35. Also, just like with Signature Spellbook: Jace, one of these cards randomly comes in foil, boosting the potential overall value. The most sought after cards at the time were Path to Exile or Rest in Peace, both competitive staples even into 2021. Path of Exile has fallen off a bit with the release of Prismatic Ending, but it’s still a highly sought-after card. Meanwhile, Martyr’s Bond is a solid card in Commander, and Worship was actually at the core of a few decent Modern decks in the past, so these two cards held a lot of value in the set, as well.

The O.G. Gideon Jura planeswalker, Shielded by Faith, True Conviction, and Blackblade Reforged all saw some play in Commander, too. In particular, Martyr’s Bond and Shielded by Faith were both Commander deck exclusives, never before printed in foil! The first foil printings of those two cards were certainly a draw for this box set. Realistically, since one of the eight cards in the box set will always be a foil, you were basically going to always profit in terms of current value if you bought it in the $35 to $40 range. Because they are alternate-art, alternate-border cards, they will always have some demand from collectors.

Still, the set hasn’t kept its value into 2021, with the non-foil cards worth a grand total of less than $20. On the other hand, if you manage to get a Blackblade Reforged, Path to Exile, or Rest in Peace foil, you recoup about $5 to $7. If you’re a collector of these types of unusual promotional type Magic the Gathering cards, you’re best off buying these cards individually as singles.
