Coastal Discovery – A Magic the Gathering Card Review

Coastal Discovery is a Sorcery card from Magic the Gathering’s Battle for Zendikar set. It draws you two cards for four mana (3 general, 1 Blue). While it’s basically the same casting cost as old favorite creature Mulldrifter, you don’t get a 2/2 flying body along with it. However, it does have Awaken 4 on it, for an alternate cost of six mana (5 generic, 1 Blue).

In Limited, such as draft or sealed deck, this was a fairly acceptable card. A 4/4 is nothing to sneeze at for a card that also draws two for you. While Awaken would be a fairly powerful mechanic in Limited, this card never saw competitive play.

Compared to other Awaken cards such as Sheer Drop in White and Ruinous Fall in Black, this card is pretty unexciting. But, it could give Blue decks a creature that it may not otherwise easily have. Considering that the Awaken would likely be used on a land that would be able to attack already, it’s like being able to draw two cards and get a 4/4 with Haste. That’s really good in Blue, although 6 mana seems a bit steep for that effect.

In practice, Coastal Discovery’s true value only emerged in Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper Commander decks. As Noyan Dar essentially allows you to Awaken 3 each time you cast an instant or sorcery spell when he’s in play, Coastal Discovery’s Awaken cost suddenly seems a lot more palatable. Otherwise, unless Awaken or a similar mechanic returns in the future, Coastal Discovery will forever be limited to being played in a single Commander deck. Then again, that’s more than can be said for many other Magic the Gathering cards.
